Few tips to explore New York City :
- Wear weather appropriate clothes and shoes. Winters can be really harsh so be prepared.
- Check weather reports and flight schedules while you are there. Storms can cause issues like flight delays/cancellations. In some situations you may have to stock up food and stay indoors.
- Walking or using subway around the city is easy.
- Streets generally run from East-West, Avenues run North-South. North is uptown and South is downtown. If the streets numbers are increasing then you are heading North. Detailed explanation at Streets and Avenues: There is a Difference.
- Get a metro card, multiple options available depending on your length of stay or usage. Not fancy but gets you around faster. Look for green bulbs to find a subway.

- I love walking around, but if you are family can go for sightseeing using the hop on hop off (HOHO) buses.
- Yellow Taxis from airport have a flat rate, however, tolls and tips are additional. So approx. 60+ USD
- Stay away from scammers at tourist spots
- Hotels are small and expensive. For me staying in Timesquare worked as a solo girl I could get around anytime for food or sightseeing. For some staying outside city seems appropriate based on hotel costs.
- Shopping in NY is good. There's multiple outlets outside city. There are paid buses which can take u to these spots. Or you can simply walk the streets and shop.
- Watch a broadway show, its worth it!!! I saw Disney's Aladdin and it was amazing experience.
- I am aware of 3 rooftops (can be more) for good view of city - Empire State, Rockefeller and One World Trade Center. Each has different views.
- NYC has many museums. Find one that interests you.
- With Staten Island ferry you can Statue of Liberty from far. You can get paid ferries for better views. They take you quite near to the statue.
- There's a lot to explore. Make itineraries and get out early. There are lot of options for food and clubbing. The city has a buzzing night life.
